PRINTS

The emphasis of my undergraduate work at California State University, Sacramento was in drawing and original printmaking, principally etching.  By the time I graduated in the summer of 1973 the print market was being profoundly altered by the introduction of what were called limited-edition prints.  Unlike original prints, etchings, lithographs and serigraphs, published in editions of 100 or less, these cheap photo-mechanical reproductions of original paintings and drawings were printed in numbers as high as 25,000 and more.  That the inks and papers used in these issues were cheap and unstable didn't even occur to many of the less sophisticated gallery patrons.  They were, after all, buying art for the first time in their lives.

These Mill Pond Press-type reproductions are still around but the art of original printmaking has come a long way.  I cannot overemphasize the importance of the personal computer to contemporary printmaking.  Archival papers and inks are readily available, making limited and open editions of high-quality original prints possible to practically any artist.

Critic, below, an inkjet print on Rives BFK , is a digitally enhanced photograph of our dog Jinx looking at a painting.  I printed a limited edition of only 3 Critics plus one artist's proof.  There are no copies of Critic available for sale.

Traditional Family Values, a limited edition suite of three photo-etchings, appears on a separate page.
